À La Mode - Fur Collar Coats

With temperatures dipping to single-degree digits in our beloved New York this month, I find myself longing for the warm embrace of a fur collar coat.  Always chic and insanely practical to boot, there's no better way to brave the biting cold.

Inspirations - Vivienne Westwood for the English National Ballet

Feast your eyes on a fashion fairy tale. The English National Ballet has partnered with the ever-engaging Vivienne Westwood to bring a fresh face to the world of ballet as the first step of their rebrand. Who better to model than the members of a world renowned ballet company? With their inherent grace and lithe forms these dancer-models do more for fashion than I've seen in some time.

Favorite Places - The Meadow

The Meadow in NYC combines some of my favorite things in one lovely shop. Fresh flowers, fine sea salts, local and rare chocolates and eclectic bitters line the shelves of their adorable little shop. Every time the husband and I are in Greenwich Village we wander in, eager to, at the very least, sample a new chocolate bar.

On our most recent trip in we selected some of their more adventurous sea salts for my future brother in law. Lemon flake salt, Sugar Maple sea salt and roasted cacao beans in tow, we couldn't resist grabbing a piece of artisanal beef jerky made from all local ingredients on the way out. Ever a fan of the saline, I use their salts with devotion.

Color Pairing - Blue + Orange

I love the contrast of a rich, deep blue juxtaposed against dramatic orange.  While the colors are certainly eye-catching, they also have an ethereal quality about them, reminiscent of a gorgeous, other-worldly sunset.

Covets - Golden Leather Goods

I have a thing for gold, and golden small leather goods just shout to me of luxury. I love pulling a gleaming wallet out of my bag. What better way to carry around your valuables than in a little bit of gold, after all? I'm just loving the interpretations below, ranging from soft and romantic to studded and sassy.

Favorite Places - Doloris Petunia

I have totally fallen for the wonderful designs dreamed up by Courtney Prince, the genius behind Etsy's Doloris Petunia.  Over-the-top opulent, I love the idea of creating a custom look to call my very own.  The crystals are hand-dyed and vintage, and each piece is uniquely crafted, with no two exactly the same.  My favorite is the Brooklyn statement necklace, an ombré delight transitioning from a dark black-blue to muted greys + pinks.

Because, as Miss. Prince sums up oh so well, 'one of a kind is the new black'.

Beauty - Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick

I love a good lip stain. I never have the patience for ordinary lipsticks- if I'm bothering to wear one it's because I'm out and about. And what does that mean but sipping a cup of coffee while meandering down city streets and window shopping, having a drink with friends, or sharing a lovely meal with the husband? None of these activities are lipstick friendly. As such I've been on a kind of quest, a crusade for a lip stain that lasts as long as I do and doesn't produce unsightly flaking or an early 90's reproduction (oh, that ghastly dark lipliner with nary an inner color to be seen).

Enter, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick. A friend and coworker picked a tube of this little gem up for me around the holidays and I am simply smitten. Its goes on so smooth and leaves my lips feeling velvety for hours. It smells like vanilla coming out of the tube. Best of all- it lasts through a meal. A touch up is usually in order, but you don't have to run for the bathroom. Take your time, finish that glass of wine. This stain has you covered. I can't wait to pick it up in several more shades.

Books We're Reading - A Hologram for the King

I love Dave Eggers.  What is the What is one of my most cherished tomes, one of those 'I'm-going-to-buy-a-copy-for-everyone-I-know-and-change-their-lives' type of book.  My husband and I, in fact, were both so excited about his latest, A Hologram for the King that we independently decided to rush out and purchase it.  For each other.  As Christmas presents.

With my 2 copies in tow, I sat down on a recent Sunday and ended up finishing it the very same day.

A quick read, it centers on Alan Clay, an aging business consultant with a massive amount of debt and a string of unsuccessful business ventures behind him.  He has one last ditch chance to turn his life around - a pitch to the King of Saudi Arabia to provide all of the IT work for the country's up-and-coming King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC).  The project from the start is plagued with hold-ups and delays - Alan and his team of young upstarts are put in a tent with no air conditioning, they have no Wi-Fi for their presentation, and aren't given any food.  They expect the King's arrival each day, only to be told at the last minute that he is out of town or simply not coming.  With so much unexpected time on his hands, Alan listlessly drifts from place to place - drinking illegal moonshine in his hotel room, endlessly worrying about a new lump on his back, pondering his future, and repeatedly starting and stopping a letter to his college-aged daughter on life, parenthood and the choices we all make along the way.  He often daydreams about his past, and we learn of how obsolete he has made himself, both personally and professionally.  Alan's own failings are inextricably linked to a global shift in business to outsourcing, and Eggers' focuses' quite a bit on the lack of manufacturing in America, the resulting dominance of China, and their perceived unethical business practices.

The novel is getting mixed reviews for sure.  A character study of a troubled everyman during a pivotal moment in his life, some find the tale too simple, with 'nothing happening'.  And, it's true - there is very little action, with most of the narrative spent on Alan's musings and recollections.  But I love that about Eggers - his sparse, straight-forward prose.  His lack of resolution.  His willingness to take on the American Dream and reveal the harsh realities that are undermining our old hopes.  Yet, the story ends with some glimmer of promise in a way that is also very American - a willful blindness to what is happening, amnesia erasing the past, and a somehow optimistic look ahead to a bleak future.

I think that is what has stayed with me the most - maybe it's senseless, a fool's way of viewing the world.  But to look towards an uncertain tomorrow and think everything will work out anyway - it's how I want to think.  It's simple.  And it's beautiful.

Life in Photos - The NY Botanical Gardens

My lovely sister was in town this month. While she was we took a trip to the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx to see “Manolo Valdés: Monumental Sculpture.” I'm so happy we did. The sculptures were beautiful, made ethereal by the wintry landscape of the park, the icy blue sky overhead and pale sunlight that accompanied us.

The exhibit is on view at the Botanical Gardens through May.

Covets - Rose Gold

rose gold

Ever since I saw my first glimmer of rose gold blushing in the light, I knew it was love at first sight.  While it's been difficult in prior years to find of-the-moment pieces incorporating this precious metal, more and more designers are getting as hooked as I am, producing lovely, on-trend collars, chunky rings and more (West Elm even has rose gold flatware!).  With so many options, it's easier than ever to add a dash romance to your look.

A Case for Mixing Metals

Fashion has always been guided by a certain etiquette - you know, the 'don't wear white after Labor Day' adage, or the 'black + brown don't mix' decree.  While a lot of these directions are now being disavowed in favor of sartorial experimentation, I've always found it a bit hard to let go of my distaste for mixing metals.  I get a bit frenzied about it, truth be told - I don't like wearing a bag with silver accents, for example, if I'm wearing a gold statement ring.  I've been trying lately to be more adventurous with metal mixing, combining brass and rose gold, silver and copper.  I'm able to ease into the look with pieces like these that use more than 1 metal; it's not so difficult to choose a purse with gold hardware and add on some silver bangles if you have a necklace that incorporates both tones (I just couldn't pass up the Sachin + Babi treasure, heavily discounted on Ideeli a few months ago, for that very reason).

After all, isn't the fun of fashion breaking all the rules?

Trends We're Watching - Wedge Sneakers

I keep going back and forth on the high-top wedge sneaker trend. There are a lot of appealing interpretations to be found but, as a die-hard flats lady, I can't help but think of the impracticality of it all - athletic shoes with sky high wedges? Could they be comfortable, or are they just a sportier version of heels? Whichever side of the fence you're on, I've found a few that may just sway me yet.

On the Fringe

As a long-time fan of Fringe Studio, I was ecstatic to receive two of their bell jars for Christmas from Fortune.

Intensely vivid colors depict fantastical scenes from nature, easily energizing any living space.

The Curious.  The Scarce.  The Beautiful.  Never a more truthful slogan.
