Life In Photos - Nick Cave: Heard NY

Last week I was lucky enough to see Heard: NY at Grand Central Station. The project, by Nick Cave (the artist, not the musician, much to Pie's chagrin), involved a heard of 30 life-size horses that perched motionless in a heavily trafficked entryway to the station for most of the time. Twice a day the creatures would come to life with the help of the talented students of the Ailey School and some very wonderful harpists and percussionists. But before any of this happened you simply saw the horses, perfectly still, beautiful, and wondered how all of this could possibly work.

It all became clear quite quickly as the dancers filed out and draped themselves in the brightly colored raffia. One became the head, the other the hind.

The performance then began with a gentle promenade set to the harp. A file of prancing, nuzzling, horses that rustled and tossed their heads and seemed just as sweet as the real thing.

The drums erupted after some time, and then things really started to heat up. The rear dancers separated and in a flurry of movement we were suddenly plunged into Mardi Gras.

And then raffia was put aside once more. Costumes were hung up. The dancers exited to raucous applause, and I was left feeling elated.
